It leads to a special diploma from the International Baccalaureate Organization in addition to the student's New York State diploma, or to certificates in individual IB subjects. The curriculum combines rigorous academics with extracurricular activities in sports, the arts, and community service. It can open opportunities for college credit and advanced placement, scholarships, and acceptance in highly selective colleges and universities.
While Kenmore West, Kenmore East, City Honors School, and Grand Island High School are the only schools in Erie County to offer the Diploma Program, there are 46 other IB diploma schools across New York State and 800 in the United States. Internationally, IB diploma programmes number over 2,450 in 146 countries.
About 15% of Kenmore West students participate in the IB Diploma Program. Fifty-three students in the Class of 2013 were our first IB graduates. There are 48 IB students in the Class of 2014 and 46 in the class of 2015. Fifty-five students are registered for IB from the class of 2016, and 68 students from the Class of 2017 are registered for pre-IB courses in anticipation of the program.Nearly 85% of our full diploma candidates achieved the diploma in 2013, an exceptionally high number. Globally, the pass rate for the diploma was 79%. In the USA, the pass rate is about 70%, and in New York State, about 65%.Kenmore West graduated its 2nd class of International Baccalaureate students in June 2014. Once again, the graduating class exceeded the state and the national IB Diploma pass rate and matched the world average. In five IB courses at West, students surpassed the world average in final grades in those courses. Students from the 2014 IB class are attending colleges including Amherst, Cornell, University of Maryland, George Washington, RIT, University of Rochester, University of Minnesota, Hamilton, and many local colleges. These graduates received over 5 million dollars in scholarships. Kenmore West is looking forward with pride to its third graduating class of IB students in June 2015.Parents or students who have questions about the program should use the links below to learn more, or email Laura Howse, the Kenmore West IB Diploma Program Coordinator.
