Several Ken-Ton Music Teachers Among 2017 JazzBuffalo Poll Winners
Several Ken-Ton School District music faculty were among those honored in the 2017 JazzBuffalo Poll.
The 2017 Jazz Baritone Saxophone winner was Laura Anderson, instrumental music teacher at Kenmore West High School and district music coordinator, and the 2017 Jazz Piano winner was Lisa Hasselback, vocal music teacher at Franklin and Lindbergh Elementary. This is the third year in a row that Anderson and Hasselback were the winners in their respective categories in the JazzBuffalo Poll.
For the second year in a row, Phil Aguglia, band director at Kenmore East High School, was the Jazz Middle School/High School Educator winner. Also, E.J. Koeppel, string teacher at Franklin Elementary and Franklin Middle, was the runner-up in the Jazz Accompaniment category, and Michael Ihde, instrumental and IB music teacher at Kenmore East, received an Honorable Mention in the Jazz Alto Saxophone category.
Also, the Hot Club of Buffalo which includes Koeppel as a member was the Jazz Traditional Group winner and runner-up in the Most Memorable Local Jazz Performance and Jazz CD Release categories.
The poll honors one winner and one runner up as well as additional honorable mentions in each of approximately 30 different categories. The poll included top honors for performers of each individual jazz instrument as well as additional categories such as middle school/high school music teacher.
This was the fourth year that outstanding musicians were distinguished through the poll, which is conducted by the Greater Buffalo Jazz Society (JazzBuffalo). Jazz Buffalo readers, audiences, fans, musicians and jazz supporters submitted ballots to demonstrate what audiences appreciated in 2017.
