Nearly Half of All 551 Kenmore East/Kenmore West Graduates Earn Advanced, CTE or IB Distinctions
On Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25, the Ken-Ton School District community honored 551 graduates of Kenmore East High School and Kenmore West High School during commencement ceremonies at Kleinhans Music Hall. Nearly half of all graduates earned at least one of the following distinctions: an Advanced Regents Diploma, an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors, a Technical Endorsement on their Regents Diploma, or as candidates for the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.
The Kenmore East Class of 2017, which celebrated its commencement ceremony on June 24, included 213 graduates. Of those, 23 earned an Advanced Regents Diploma; 36 earned an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors; 30 earned a Technical Endorsement on their Regents Diploma; and 30 were National Honor Society (NHS) members.
The Kenmore West Class of 2017, which celebrated its commencement ceremony in June 25, included 338 graduates. Of those, 90 earned an Advanced Regents Diplom; 34 earned an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors; 44 earned a Technical Endorsement on their Regents Diploma; 40 were NHS members; and 50 were distinguished as members of the school’s selective Honors Club.
To earn a Regents Diploma with the Advanced designation, students must have passed two additional math exams and one additional science exam. They must also have taken two extra years of foreign language study. To earn the additional Honors designation, students must have completed all exams with a score of 90 or better. To earn a Technical Endorsement, students must have successfully completed the requirements of a New York State-certified career and technical education program.
Kenmore East and Kenmore West are two of only four schools in the eight counties of Western New York that offer the prestigious IB Program, and the Class of 2017 included 54 candidates for the IB Diploma – 18 students at Kenmore East and 36 students at Kenmore West. The IB Program includes some of the most rigorous high school coursework in the world, and Ken-Ton IB graduates have been accepted into some of the most selective colleges in the U.S. while earning significant scholarship awards and college credit.
The Class of 2017 also included 20 students who successfully completed the requirements of the Ken-Ton School District’s innovative Career Academies – 11 students at Kenmore East and nine students at Kenmore West. This was the fourth year that students have completed the Career Academies since they were first established at both high schools. The four Career Academies – Pre-Engineering, Virtual Enterprise & Finance, Information Technology, and Computer Networking & Technology – are New York State-certified CTE programs.
