Athletes Recognized at Athletic Awards Ceremonies
At their respective Athletic Awards Nights, Kenmore East and Kenmore West recognized hundreds of student athletes. Among the honorees included 25 varsity teams who earned Scholar-Athlete distinction from New York State. The award is given to those teams who have 75 percent of their rosters carrying a GPA of 90 percent or higher.
The Male and Female Athletes of the Year included, from Kenmore East, Serena Sordetto and Kahlil O'Neil, and from Kenmore West, Christina Wende and Andrew Fron.
The following are some highlights from the Kenmore East and Kenmore West spring 2018 athletics season:
Kenmore West golfer Zac Boyes qualified for the State Championships, finishing with a +15 and tying for 30th place overall out of 99 golfers who teed off on Day 1. Kenmore East golfer Sean Barrett finished 10th at the Section VI Championships and was an alternate for the state tournament.
Kenmore East Baseball entered the Class A-1 playoffs as the ninth seed. The team defeated Sweet Home 10-3 in the pre-quarterfinals but fell to first seed Williamsville in the quarterfinals.
Kenmore West Baseball finished the season with an overall record of 13-8, losing an extremely close game against Williamsville South in the Class A1 Quarterfinals. Senior Andrew Fron was featured as a WKBW Channel 7 Super Athlete of the Week.
Kenmore West Softball finished the season 12-8, losing to West Seneca West in the Class A1 Quarterfinals. Player Abby Bortkowski was the WIVB Channel 4 2018 Female Scholar Athlete Scholarship Award Winner, and a Buffalo News Scholar Athlete.
Kenmore West Track & Field had several top-three finishers at the Section VI Championships: Mark Marrelli (first place, 110-meter hurdles; and third place, 400-meter hurdles); Chris Kaszynski (third place, pole vault); and Christina Wende (second place, 100-meter hurdles and triple jump; third place, long jump). At the state championships, Wende finished fourth in the triple jump and 10th in the 100-meter hurdles.
Kenmore East Track & Field had several top-five finishes at the Section VI state qualifier: Nick Coburn (fourth place, pentathlon), John O’Connell (fifth place, 400-meter dash); Kahlil O’Neal (fifth place, triple jump), and the 4 x 100 relay squad (fifth place).
